Hirata Terunobu studied at the Warrandyte Potter’s Cottage in the 1990’s. He has been practising for over 15 years. He has also studied alongside a number of traditional potters in Japan with a particular influence on Japanese Bizen pottery.
Hirata originally trained as a chef and worked at Kuni’s Japanese, one of the oldest Japanese restaurants in Australia. His experience as a chef has informed his work as a potter, ensuring that the form and function of each piece has been carefully considered. His work is as beautiful to look at as it is to use with a strong awareness of balance and detail.
